Heard: Mumford & Sons & Birdy

So imagine my delight when my favourite female vocalist paired up with one of my top ten bands. Birdy does a Mumford & Sons track for the 'Brave' OST with Mumford themselves as backing vocals. I absolutely love it. The fact that she is only 15 years old with the voice like that makes her all the more interesting to listen to. Her voice is soulful, crooning and I'm so excited to watch her grow as an artist.

The lyrics by Mumford & Sons are pretty special too.

Though I may speak some tongue of old
Or even spit out some holy word
I have no strength with which to speak
When you sit me down and see I’m weak

We will run and scream
You will dance with me
We’ll fulfil our dreams and we’ll be free

We will run and scream
You will dance with me
We’ll fulfil our dreams and we’ll be free

We will be who we are
And they’ll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away

So I had done wrong but you put me right
My judgement burned in the black of night
When I give less than I take
It is my fault my own mistake

We will run and scream
You will dance with me
We’ll fulfil our dreams and we’ll be free
We will be who we are
And they’ll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away

If you're a Disney fan, 'Brave' is a great one to watch. I'm loving the fact that the theme of Disney movies isn't so much about a prince swooping in to save a little princess from harm all the time. The theme of this movie is around a strong-willed young woman and her relationship with her Mum. Lovely!

Decorated: Emerald is the new Tangerine

Pantone of the Year 2013 is none other than the glorious green hue: Emerald. It appears the Wizard of Oz was rather a wizard for choosing such a fabulous colour for his city.  I'm a huge fan of the green colour range and Emerald is no exception. As a result of Pantone's selection, Emerald is popping its glory everywhere. My favourite use of this colour is in accents. Its way too overpowering if it's everywhere but looks classic, luxurious and stylish if used sparingly. Loving these touches of Emerald on these interiors...

Heard: The Shins

I first heard The Shins 'New Slang' on the Garden State OST back in uni days and absolutely loved but was never really exposed to them until about two years ago when a Shins obsessed friend properly introduced me to them. The first two tracks he played for me are from album 'Wincing the Night Away': 'Red Rabbits' and 'Sea Legs'.

Since hearing them, I cannot bloody get enough of them. The lyrics are totes poetic, deep & I'm sure there are a gazillion meanings behind them. They leave me thinking 'BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAAAAAAN?????' Check out this little section… I mean honestly, what the fork does it mean?

'Out of a gunnysack for red rabbits,
Into the crucible to be rendered an emulsion,
And we can't allow a chance they'd restore themselves,
So we can't make it easy on you.'

your thoughts???

All I know is that I can listen to them over and over and over again and not get sick of hearing them as is often the case with these more modern bands. The Shins leave me in a mood that is nostalgic, contemplative, and creative. Not a bad state of being.

Their most recent album 'Port of Morrow' took one full listen to from start to finish to convince me that they take rightful place in my top 5 bands of all time. (Gosh, top 5 is just so few. I think I have to have a top ten and cannot possibly rank them in order of preference. They're all number one. Will share that list one day soon).

If at first you're not a fan, list again and you'll see them grow on you in a spectacular spectacular way.

Designed: Cerise Doucede

Cerise Doucede is a fabulous French photographer who uses strings to suspend objects mid-air. She creates this bizarre illusion of gravity defied - objects frozen in time. She uses every day objects in her tableau's creating mesmerizing and dreamlike scenes. I'm afraid I can identify with one too many of them.

(This is what I feel like at work more times than I am comfortable saying haha)

(Oh crumbs... and like this too when I'm in front of my wardrobe)

Inspired: Long Weekend

I'm off on some adventures with my sister and her friends tomorrow instead of working. What a treat! So until Monday, adios amigos.

Decorated: Colour Splash

I have my Mum's voice in my head whenever I'm embarking on a new decorating adventure. She says to always remain classic and add touches of detail to make things interesting. A splash of colour goes a long way to turn dull into  delightful!

A beige couch can be... well… a little beige. Throw on some brightly patterned scatter cushions and hey presto, a whole new look to give the beige a little personality. Add a gorgeous red industrial floor lamp and you've got an eclectic look that can easily be changed up if or when you get bored of it.

Perhaps the most wonderful thing about decorating in this way is that once you've made the initial investment in those big scary expensive things like couches or dining room tables, the colourful accessories and statement pieces can be scavenged from everywhere and any where. Markets, opps shops, swop shops with friends, street vendors, your grannies attic, chain stores… the possibilities are endless for adding colour to your world!

Heard: Red Hot Chili Peppers

'Under the Bridge' was the first Red Hot Chili Peppers song that I ever heard some 15 years ago and I've been a fan of these funk rockers ever since. Last night, after many years of patiently waiting to watch them live, I finally heard them live at Cape Town Stadium. They totally blew me away. Hearing songs like 'Scar Tissue' , 'Californication', and 'The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie' live, in person, with Anthony Kiedis some 20m away from me, is an experience I will never forget.

Those guys are grungy, crusty, old but oh-so-cool. AK still does it for me despite being 50 years old and severely mixed up in all sorts of narcotics. He's still a bona fide hottie and with a pretty radical vocal performance, I kind of forgive him for lack of interaction/personality on stage. Flea is absolutely hysterical - the voice that comes out of that body is not what I expected at all and I must say, he totally made the performance come alive. His energy and interaction with the crowd toppled AK from #1 favourite position. Chad Smith is a monster on the drums and totally looks like Will Ferrell which makes me love him even more. Josh Klinghoffer was pretty insane on the guitar but it annoyed me a little when he mixed up the riff on Dani California and he freaking sang over AK on 'Scar Tissue' chorus.

All in all, I am well impressed. They've been doing this since like 1983 - 30 years of blood, sugar, sex and magik is no small feat. Rock on mothertrukkkkka's.

Styled: M love M

I'm a huge fan of eclectic style and nobody does it better than Mara from M loves M. She always looks polished, stylish and timeless. Her style dares me to dream of the possibilities in my current wardrobe, and what items to start including in my future wardrobe. Check out a few of my favourites below. (If only the stores she shops at were in South Africa... yowzer I'd be in trouble!)

Noted: Meh.

Meh. What a great word. It says so much in those three little letters. So much that just can't be explained with normal words or sentences. It's a feeling, its an adjective, its a noun, it's a verb.

Meh is used to describe anything include, and not limited to, the below:

Yes
No
Maybs
Kind of
Never
Always
Okay
Alright
No thank you
Yes please
Look yo I really don't care so just shut the * expletive* up
If you want
Whatevs
I don't know
If you want
I don't want to really
Well
Shut up
I don't really care
No honestly, I don't care...
Hmmmm
Ummmm

And it's meaning is never actually all that clear when it's used:
"You wanna come round?"
"meh"
"What does that mean?"
(told all of the definitions above)
"So which one? yes or no?"
"meh"
"That a yes?"
"meh"
"A no??"
"meh"
"A maybe???"
"meh?"
"Maybe???"
"meh"
"Look please tell me"
"meh"...
(via U.D.)

Today I'm afraid to say has been a bit of a meh day. I'm not sure why - perhaps because it's Monday, perhaps its because I'm not feeling hundreds, perhaps is the diabetes playing with my levels and making me angry. So meh it is. Let me be. I'll shake it off tomorrow.

Heard: The Postelles

Heard The Postelles new track 'Pretend its love' this morning. Listen here.

Then investigated a little further because I liked what I heard, and found above. It's little like The Kooks mashed with some good ol' country. Enjoy!

2013: Let's Do This

This year is the year for adventure. Initially I thought that in order to have adventure I had to uproot my life and move to three different countries in three years. Clearly the Creator of me thought differently and shut that door very firmly.

Now this year's plan is out the window. Or at least, my 'this year's plan' is out the window leaving a vast open space for new plans - 'my plans' is what I would like to say but somehow I don't think my life is up to me but rather to the King of the Universe! With that weight lifted off my shoulders, I'm opening myself up to new possibilities, new plans, new adventures.

My resolution for this year is a simple one: To have more adventures. Although I'm free as a bird, I'm all grown up now but I don't want to lose my adventurous spirit. I want to go skinny dipping in the icy sea at the dead of night. I want to jump in my car and drive for hours without a destination in mind. I want to go stomping at trance parties in the middle of a forest. I want to spend weekends of deep conversation and faith-building with friends. I want to go camping and have silence singing me to sleep.

That brings me to 'Jemima says'. Part of my adventuring begins right here in front of this screen. I have always loved writing, and I absolutely adore sharing things over the interweb that make me smile, think, have a little tear… generally just feel something at all. To my friends and family, I send out emails on frequent but sporadic basis that contain anything from a gorgeous photograph to a crazy video. One of these friends suggested instead of sending them in an email, why not start a blog. So this is my big adventure into blogging.

I want to write . I want to share funny videos that make me laugh out loud and hope others do to. I want to share things that inspire me, grow me, change me, mould me, and make me wake up.

So to my resolution I pledge this blog and as Dad would say… Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Comments and thoughts are welcome of course!
